Japetus is een maan van Saturnus, opgebouwd uit ijs en gesteente. Hij heeft een opvallend contrast tussen een lichte, ijsrijke zijde en een donkere zijde die bedekt is met stof. Daarom wordt hij ook wel de “Yin-Yangmaan” genoemd. Door zijn gebonden rotatie is altijd dezelfde kant naar Saturnus gericht, net als onze maan naar de aarde.
De balans tussen licht en donker, tussen reflectie en absorptie, de harmonie, grilligheid en het sterke contrast vormen de inspiratie voor dit schilderij.

Japetus is a moon of Saturn, composed of ice and rock. It shows a striking contrast between a bright, ice-rich side and a dark side covered with dust. For this reason, it is also called the “Yin-Yang Moon.” Because of its synchronous rotation, the same side always faces Saturn — just as our Moon always faces Earth.
